Founders of Gloomhaven es un juego competitivo de colocación de losetas, selección de acciones y construcción de ciudades en el que cada jugador controla una raza fantástica que trabaja para construir la ciudad de Gloomhaven y ganar influencia sobre sus residentes. Este es un juego independiente ambientado en el mismo universo que Gloomhaven. Sin embargo, los eventos tienen lugar cientos de años antes de Gloomhaven y representan la construcción original de la ciudad.

En Founders of Gloomhaven, los jugadores utilizan cartas de acción para colocar edificios de recursos en el mapa de la ciudad, utilizan estos recursos para crear recursos más avanzados y luego los entregan a los sitios de construcción propuestos para ganar prestigio. Sin embargo, un jugador individual no puede hacer todo por su cuenta porque solo puede importar un pequeño número de tipos de recursos, dependiendo de su raza.
