It's a joy to build your castle, and it's a perfect example of enjoying your own progress regardless of whether you win or lose. The scoring feels a bit out of balance at times, but I adore playing this game and would never turn down a chance to get it to the table. Update: the second edition printing is a visual gamechanger, making one of the best games of all time stunning to look at as well!
I like this as much as Suburbia, even though it is a step down from the complexity level, it offers enough choices to make it interesting. The master builder (first player) gets to agonize over the values of the rooms, and then players get to agonize over how much to pay him. This alone makes the game, but there is the planning that is similar to Suburbia, in getting the best bang for your buck in scoring. And the castles are a sight to behold at the end of the game. Great theme! I don't see this getting old soon.
I have now purchased 4 copies of this game for family members. We all love the game. By far the best strategy game I have ever purchased. The alternate methods of scoring have led us to playing 100's of games and no two games being alike.
The tile pricing is boring. One player chooses the prices, but that means examining every board and doing point salad math, eh. But what is fun and creative about this game is telling the story of your castle afterwards, there's a lot of room for that.
