Reforest: Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast

I find myself going back regularly to this little tableau-builder for a satisfying solo puzzle. The multiple ways the cards are used fit surprisingly well with the theme. Given its small box, I will certainly be bringing this one on trips.

This game combines the best elements of games like Wingspan, Race for the Galaxy and Forest Shuffle. It keeps getting better with more playes. Works excellently at 1-2, ok with 3, but wouldn't play with 4. The decisions are meaningful, pace is quick, ways of scoring are varied. Perfect big game in a very small box.

Another awesome example, what can be achieved with the deck of cards. The theme is really strong in mechanics. Its great, when you understand, why the card does what it does. How some plants run away from shade, help nourish others or whatever awesome thing, they were able to bring from the forest to the table. It really is a work of love and deep understanding. Its not another : ecology is cool, lets make money out of it. This really is something special. Same true for the expansion.

I was fortunate enough to play an advance copy a couple months ago as a play-tester of the nearly finished version. The game has a great balance of simplicity and nuance - it's one of those games where after a quick first play through you have that "aha" moment where you immediately want to try out a different strategy. I appreciate the compact size and relatively short playtime as a great way to get my engine-building fix. Lovely art and attention to theme as well! Very much looking forward to sinking my teeth into to published game.
