Hoplite

I've juste rated this game 10 after my first Ftf play (Leuctra - Simple GBoH version). A really great addition to the GboH brand ; and it's just amazing for a nearly 25 ys old game system. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ! I've just rated a game whose designer is TPOW (the pope of wargame)! How my humble soul could be so pretentious to have a judgment about a game designed by TPOW ? Shame one me !!!!!!!! It's a blasphem. F*** J**** I'm so sorry my sons (and all my illegitims sons too), I'm soory my (to be born) grands sons, I'm cursed on the next 3 generations.

A slightly pseudo-rating, as I haven't used the full Hoplite rules and would like to give them a spin. However, I wanted to refight Plataea with the SGBoH rules, and it was a blast. Bow versus spear, with two massed (and very different) armies fighting it out over vast and varied terrain. Like Squad leader and Victory's Fleet series, there are no bad games of SGBoH, and this was an epic that saw the Persians break before their numbers and a veritable hail of missiles could overcome those serried ranks of grim-faced hoplites. Classic

After two scenarios using simple GBOH rules this game is a solid 9. I only play solo but found the gameplay very quick and enjoyable. The rules are straightforward generally speaking though of course it helps having a grounding in the system. Although hoplite would not be a bad introduction to GBOH.

I believe this is the best of the Great Battles of History series (Ok I may be biased vise a vie my ancestors :-) ) But seriously the command rules, sequence of play and especially the rules for Phalanx 's have been refined and perfected from the initial GBOH set and the resulting games are tense and true to history.

I like this hoplite vs hoplite battles. Really thrilling when two hoplite units collide. Fast gameplay and few counters compared to most GBOH games. If you like something different there is Plataea. Real monster. I think this battle is playable only with simple GBOH, at least I played Plataea with simple GBOH. Hoplite battles are great with "real" GBOH. As always in GMT - great production value.
