When pelted with sling shot, spears, or arrows by the enemies of Rome across the known world, Rome came up with the answer – the testudo! A whistle blown, shouted commands, and the legionaries formed the 'tortoise', a legendary formation where all troops protected themselves with an interlocking 'shell' of scutum shields that enabled them to survive incoming missiles, before moving to the assault!
