Cross Clues

Cross Clues has been the best surprise in gaming for me this year. It's fast paced, interactive, and communicative. For me this replaced codenames/decrypto, mostly because it is much simpler to setup and teach, much faster to play, and easier for beginners to enjoy on their first game. The reuptake time between word clues and guesses is as fast as you can get it (in other games you'll be forced to wait a lot), and the game manages to be goal oriented and competitive without turning half of the players into losers (a major pro for me since I play with family and people who I want to have a good experience, not competitors who I want to see fail).

It easily became my mother's favorite game, and that information alone gives this game a 10/10 rating. But I genuinely like it too! Between the Lines is the sum of many things I love in small, clever games: an elegant use of components, very high replayability, cooperative mechanics without an alpha player, and a trivia game that allows players to express themselves.

I love this game. I play it without the timer and add the rule that people shouldn't say "a good clue for X and Y would be Z" Great for big groups. For two-player games I'll sometimes house rule that each person can get two swaps (e.g. swap out the card for another) for when they get really stuck.

Absolutely a 10. It's addictive as hell. It has very easy rules. Then you have different levels of difficulty, so it can be challenging but at the same time easy enough, depending on the group's mood. I can spend a hole day just playing this.
