Nothing I can write that hasnt been said. I started with a physical copy of 4th ed. But play 3rd everywhere online. Its helped me to understand the revision but I love both. Will look out for a physical copy of 3rd because both ver. are amazing.
This game is great. It's endlessly replayable, and works well at small numbers. The most I've played with is 4 and we've not played the parley rules for larger numbers, but I'm not sure the game suits it. We've played with the Echoes expansion and the Figures expansion, and enjoyed them both. We recently acquired the Ultimate edition and plan to play all the expansions at some point. They all seem to add something unique without interfering with the original formula.
This game allows such a fun board building game, while allowing for wild swings and strategic play. The expansions open up so much more for the game too - slowing it down a bit to all for strategy to show through. There's still an ever-present risk that someone who is behind will end up with a lucky draw or something that will pull them back within reach. Almost all of the games feel close and competitive. Absolutely one of our top 3 games of all time.
I don't know how I've gone so long without ever playing this. It is simply amazing and is probably the best example of a small box card game I've ever seen. Quickly shooting up to being one of my favourite games and I want to get the ultimate edition (Own base 4E)
Seems like an insane brew of chaos and luck initially, but the more I play the more the more apparent it is that skillful and creative choices win games. Each game is wildly different from the other, and if you take the time to dive into the thematic story of each game you play, it is hilarious, schlocky madhouse of a civ game.
