In Block and Key platzieren Abenteurer 3D-Tonblöcke in einem zentralen, erhöhten Spielbereich, mit dem Ziel, ihre eigenen Auftragskarten zu vervollständigen. Die Herausforderung wird interessanter, da jeder Spieler auf seine "2D"-Perspektive beschränkt ist.

In jeder Runde können Abenteurer entweder neue Blöcke aus dem Vorrat ziehen oder EINEN Block in den gemeinsamen Raum legen. Sie können dann überprüfen, ob sie Auftragskarten vervollständigt haben, bevor sie ihre Hand auffüllen.

Das erste Abenteuer, das die erforderliche Anzahl an Auftragskarten entsprechend der Spieleranzahl vervollständigt, beendet das Spiel. Die Punkte werden gezählt und ein Spieler wird zum Sieger erklärt.
