A good game for elementary kids to learn spatial skills and patterns. Once both players reach a mastery level understanding of the game it ends up being predictable and results in many draws. This is perhaps why it is rated low on BGG, but I think it is excellent for a certain stage of life and I think deserves a high rating.

Description
Connect 4 is a well known vertical game played with "checkers" (it is more akin to Tic Tac Toe or Go Moku).
The board is placed in the stand to hold it vertically and the players drop checkers into one of the 7 slots, each of which holds 6 of the "checker's" men, until one player succeeds in getting 4 in a row--horizontally, vertically or diagonally.
The game is actually non-proprietary and nicer adult versions can be found under the name The Captain's Mistress.

Brilliant introductory strategy game. Has a great table presence, great physical and auditory experience with the dropping of the pieces, plays quickly.
Very classic. Always will enjoy tapping the other person and forcing them to help me Connect Four. Perfect game, not too difficult. Perhaps one of the easiest out there.
I am giving it 10 in order to balance a bit those unfair ratings. Yes, I know it's not the most entertaining game ever made, but be fair to your inner child - if there is a game you played far more than just once, then it surely gave you enough joy or at least a bit of fun at the time - and such a game - does not deserve to be rated as: "Awful - defiles game description". Not to mention this game helps kids develop strategic and also 3D thinking.
Connect Four is the best competitive game anyone can play in a 1v1. There's not much to say about this game, its nature of simplicity is what makes this game good. Especially when that simplicity fools your opponent into overlooking a four in a row.
CAUTION! Not suitable for children under 3 years of age. It contains small parts which could be swallowed or inhaled.
