Description Description

Fully illustrated, this is an account of air power during the decisive phase of the New Guinea campaign, when the Allies were finally able to take the offensive and destroy Japanese forces. In mid-1943, the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force (IJAAF) took over from the Navy responsibility for air operations in New Guinea, facing for the first time on a large scale the USAAF in defending their bases, supply routes, and supporting ground operations. In this book, the second of two dedicated to the New Guinea campaign, scholars Mark Stille and John Rogers, drawing on Japanese, American, and Australian sources, explain how the air war in New Guinea turned against the Japanese between June 1943 and 1944: the IJAAF, now exhausted, gradually lost strength in the face of Allied air superiority, while the Allied air offensive struck Japanese supply ships and supported landings that overwhelmed Japanese forces. Rich in tables, maps, and archival photos, the book shows how lessons learned in the hard Papua campaign of 1942-43 transformed Allied air power into the decisive element of MacArthur's 1943-44 campaign.
