90,000 BC — a great ice age is imminent. Among various animal species, an unexpected titanic struggle for global supremacy begins. Dominant Species abstractly recreates a small fragment of prehistory: the relentless advance of an ice age and what it means for living beings trying to adapt to a slowly changing Earth.
Each player takes the role of one of six major animal classes — mammal, reptile, bird, amphibian, spider, or insect. Each starts the game roughly in a state of natural balance with each other. But it won't last long: it is truly "survival of the fittest." Through clever placement of action tokens, players will try to become dominant on as many terrain tiles as possible to claim powerful card effects. They will also have the opportunity to spread their individual species and earn victory points for their animal. These efforts are supported by actions like speciation, migration, and adaptation.
All this leads finally to the end phase — the last rise of the ice age — where the player with the most victory points crowns their animal as the dominant species. Someone better become dominant quickly, because it's about to get very cold...
