Description Description
Power Grid is the updated release of the Friedemann Friese crayon game Funkenschlag. It removes the crayon aspect from network building in the original edition, while retaining the fluctuating commodities market like Crude: The Oil Game and an auction round intensity reminiscent of The Princes of Florence.

The objective of Power Grid is to supply the most cities with power when someone's network gains a predetermined size. In this new edition, players mark pre-existing routes between cities for connection, and then bid against each other to purchase the power plants that they use to power their cities.

However, as plants are purchased, newer, more efficient plants become available, so by merely purchasing, you're potentially allowing others access to superior equipment.

Additionally, players must acquire the raw materials (coal, oil, garbage, and uranium) needed to power said plants (except for the 'renewable' windfarm/ solar plants, which require no fuel), making it a constant struggle to upgrade your plants for maximum efficiency while still retaining enough wealth to quickly expand your network to get the cheapest routes.

Love this game! Played it once at a friend's, went and bought it the next day. Good balance of expanding networks with rising/falling energy prices, combined with highly competitive and encroaching territories makes it a fantastic group game. The more, the merrier!

16/7/2026 - Played Spain/Portugal. It's a smidge long and the frequent arithmetic means I'm often getting out a calculator, but man what a game. I care about what power plants my friends have. I care about what resources they are buying. I care about where they are building on the map. It feels like there is so much meat to chew on despite the simplicity of the phases. Always thrilled to play this but lets keep it to 4 players shall we. Rating: 9 Adjusted score: 10 27/08/2026 - 4p France map. Still Power Grid. Still goated

This is one of my favorite games of all time so that makes it a 10. I like bidding, the market is clever and I learnt a bit how markets behave from it so educational as well. The endgame is the weakest link of this game where you spend lot of time computing cost of the the optimal expansion and that is why it doesn't come to the table as often as I like. Our group uses some tweaks to the bidding phase to speed it up and make it make it less swingy.

Every now and then, you play a game that gives you everything you want. This game consistently delivers what I love in games, especially at high player counts. The order the cards come out, the auction chaos, the market refresh and costs consideration, the interaction on the map and the sandbagging to control the turn order. It's just amazing.

Huge surprise, I've expected boring, slow game. But it's anything but boring, it's relatevely fast, auction is straightforward and amazing, area-control is again, basic, can be very punishing if you chose bad initial position. Great game, we've played "new" USA map, older map looks too trashy, want to play more of it. The only "bad" is obvious one, you need to calculate price of your expansion, and it can be tiresome, but not too much.
