Quasi - Manu Larcenet

Quasi is Manu Larcenet's autobiographical graphic novel about his experience as a soldier during compulsory military service in France. A cathartic and brutal exploration of conscription, objection of conscience, and youth. Rendered in Larcenet's signature dark, tortured graphic style—a visual and narrative exorcism of youthful memory and coming of age.

Description Description

Twenty years have passed since compulsory military service was abolished in France, fifteen in Italy. It seems incredible, but there was a time when every male adult of legal age was obliged to give a year of their life to the armed forces or, in case of conscientious objection, to comply with civil service obligations.

In this book Manu Larcenet recounts his experience as a soldier. Without embellishment or self-indulgence, the author describes what was his daily hellish youth, with the fluctuating range of emotions in which he is a master, up to an episode that would inextricably shape his scale of values as a man and, consequently, his stylistic mark as an author. It is a cathartic tale, a true exorcism, with dark and tortured graphic storytelling, brutal and uncompromising.

Single-volume graphic novel, softcover, published by Coconino Press.
