Raptor - Una Storia Di Sokol - Edizione Limitata

Raptor is a fairytale graphic novel in which the stories of two worlds and two tormented souls intertwine: on one side, Sokól, a mercenary monster hunter against the backdrop of a fantastic feudal landscape; on the other, Arthur (inspired by the real figure of Arthur Machen), a writer of fantastic tales in nineteenth-century Wales who, mourning the loss of his young wife, trusts that the supernatural may provide him with the means to find her again. Both figures move through the twilight, in precarious balance between truth and falsehood, life and death, reality and imagination. “My protagonist is trapped between two worlds, the human and the raptor, reality and fantasy, civilisation and raw animal instinct” (from an interview with the author in The Beat). What the stories of the two characters have in common is the theme of the journey. More physical and filled with real dangers and pitfalls in Sokól’s case, more intimate and initiatory in Arthur’s, the journey told and illustrated by McKean belongs to an established literary tradition and is perhaps inevitably inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy, from which it takes the idea, developed in the celebrated opening, of becoming lost and then finding oneself again in a wood populated by infernal creatures, memories, dreams and visions.
