The title on the cover is only part of the buying decision. You need to match the game, platform, generation and format to what you own. Getting any of these wrong can make even a perfect choice of genre useless: knowing that there's “a PlayStation” or “a Switch” at home isn't enough.
The quickest approach is to identify the console first, then read the product details as answers to three questions: will it run, what do I need to download, and what does it include? The games mentioned here are examples drawn from official sources, not indications of availability in the uplay catalogue.
What do you need?
- You don't know the exact console model
- Find out its full name and whether it has a disc drive before choosing a format.
- You have a Nintendo Switch and want a Mario Kart game
- Distinguish Mario Kart 8 Deluxe from Mario Kart World, which Nintendo presents as a game for Nintendo Switch 2.
- You want to play a PS4 game on PS5
- Check backwards compatibility and format; if you want the PS5 version, check separately whether an upgrade is available.
- It's a physical product, but the packaging mentions a key or download
- Check the initial connection requirements, the storage space needed and how to launch the game after installation.
The family name does not identify the platform
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a Nintendo Switch game; Nintendo presents Mario Kart World as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. The Mario Kart name identifies the series, but does not settle the question of compatibility. If the recipient owns an earlier Switch, a copy of World will not work simply because its cover shows familiar characters. The number in the console's name is part of the decision.
The same reasoning applies when a series spans several generations. Look for the platform listed for the specific edition, not a general description of the game. The packaging for different versions can look very similar. If you're buying a gift, copying the model name from the console's settings or box is more reliable than a description such as “the white one” or “the latest one”.
Backwards compatibility and upgrades answer different questions
Backwards compatibility lets you run a game designed for an earlier console. An upgrade gives you access to a different version, subject to the terms for that title. Sony's documentation states that most PS4 games can be played on PS5, but this does not automatically turn every PS4 copy into a PS5 copy. Check which experience you want to buy and which version actually runs.
Disc-based games require a compatible disc drive to be installed. When moving from a physical PS4 edition to a digital PS5 edition, Sony requires you to use the disc for upgrades that call for it: installation must not be confused with converting the physical copy into a disc-free licence. Check the price, upgrade availability and requirements for each individual game, rather than relying on the made-up rule that all upgrades are free.
A physical copy does not necessarily contain all the game data
Nintendo distinguishes standard Switch 2 game cards from game-key cards. The latter let you download the full game, then require the card to be inserted to launch it. The physical package therefore serves a real purpose, but does not remove the need for an initial download. This is an important distinction for anyone with a slow connection or who wants to start playing as soon as they open the gift.
Before buying, check the information on the packaging and read the storage requirements. Do not estimate how much storage you need from the size of the box or the genre: it depends on the product and its updates. Also distinguish a physical key from a package containing a code to redeem. These are different ways to access a game, and you should identify them from the specific description rather than the photograph alone.
Language, save data and playing with friends need separate checks
A version that is compatible with your console may still not be right for how you want to use it. If you read in Italian, check the text language; if you want to hear the dialogue in Italian, check the audio language separately. Translated packaging is not enough to confirm both. For a story-driven game, this distinction can matter more than a cosmetic extra included in the special edition.
If you're moving from another platform or generation, do not assume you can transfer your saves. Likewise, being able to play the same title does not mean that two versions can connect online. These are separate checks: software compatibility, transferring progress and playing with friends. Resolving the first does not automatically resolve the others, and the features you need must be documented on the game's product page or by official support.
Before buying, describe the evening you actually have in mind
Try putting it into a complete sentence: “I'll be playing on this console, using this format, on my own or with these people.” If you can't complete it, you don't yet have all the information you need to compare two offers. For a PC purchase, also specify the storefront where the game must be activated and the system requirements: the word PC does not make every configuration or account equivalent.
If you're buying to catch up on a series, start with the title you actually want and find a version you can use, rather than choosing the cheapest one first. If you're buying a gift, keep the model details alongside the title you've chosen. The final comparison then becomes brief and practical: the correct platform, a suitable format and all the content needed for your intended use. Only then does it make sense to consider the extras.
Questions before buying
Does playing a PS4 game on PS5 automatically make it a PS5 game?
No. Backwards compatibility and access to the PS5 version are separate matters. Check the terms of any upgrade for the title and format you own.
Does a game-key card contain the full game?
For Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo explains that it is used to download the game: after the download, the card must be inserted to launch it. Also check the storage space and connection required.
Can I choose a console based only on the series logo?
No. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart World are a clear example: they belong to the same series, but the latter is a Nintendo Switch 2 title.
