Hamburg typographer and designer Ralf Mauer has been creating animals from typefaces for decades. Garamond, Fraktur, or Optima become design elements here. Each animal has a very unique and distinctive character. The metaphorical animal names include Newspaper Duck, Rascal, or Envy Ram. The complementary word to the type-animal image is then set in the same font in which the animal is 'drawn', creating flawless type pairs. This method of creation is not only original and unique, but it creates an extraordinary zoo that must first be put back together in the memory game - because the night awaits the owl like the worm awaits the books.
