Beyond the Wall: Hühnerbuch (GDR)

The chicken has always been a companion of humanity. Countless stories of gods and heroes are associated with the chicken. Various gods, whether of fertility, war, or healing, adorn themselves with the radiant splendor of this bird or at least their followers with its colorful feathers. The chicken is particularly linked to the symbolism and mythology of the sun, as chickens rise with the sun, and the crowing of the rooster joyfully announces the new day and drives away the evil spirits of the night. At the same time, chickens are symbols of luck and wealth, as the possession of one or more hens protects against the bitterest poverty. But even the individual chicken has advantageous properties. A chicken spreads its wings protectively over the chicks, making it a symbol of the protection of the weak, while a fighting cock represents aggressiveness and vigilance. Expressions like 'dumme Hühner', 'Gegacker über ungelegte Eier' and 'aufgescheuchter Hühnerhaufen' testify to a certain underestimation of their abilities by some people, but chickens are a very social group, they warn each other (and others) of enemies. They are particularly inclined to lively conversation - sometimes even with humans. And chickens can dream ... So there are among the chickens those special specimens that leave the protection of their flock to start a life as adventurers with cheerful clucking.
