Action retrieval is the mechanism where the actions you use go into a spent pile and you must give up a turn to get them back: every card or token played is a choice that will cost you later. The result is constant tension between doing a lot now and running out of options afterwards, typical of expert games where the long plan matters. It appeals to optimisers and to people who play on their own: nearly all these titles start at 1 player.
The weight is almost always medium-heavy: the average recommended age is 13 and sessions run around an hour and three quarters. Gloomhaven (Seconda Edizione Inglese) (EDIZIONE INGLESE) is the best-known example, with cards lost for good if overused; Wireless and Orloj - L'orologio Astronomico di Praga are two-hour management games for 1-4 from age 14; Cryptic Nature (EDIZIONE INGLESE) and Níjar (EDIZIONE INGLESE) finish in ninety minutes.
