Hex and counter is the classic wargame format: a hex-grid map, cardboard counters printed with attack, defence and movement values, and rules that simulate terrain, supply and morale. These games are for people who want to refight a battle or a campaign with historical accuracy, and who do not mind studying a rulebook before the first turn.
They are almost always played at two or solo: the average count is 2 to 3 and the average length runs past six hours, so the appetite for depth matters more than the number of players. Suggested age is 12. Band of Brothers: Texas Arrows is the 90-minute entry point; Combat Commander: Mediterranean is tactical and card-driven, about two hours; Ardennes and Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear – Operation Barbarossa 1941 (Third Edition) are four to six hour simulations; Space Empires: 4X takes the same format into space for up to 4 players.
