In area control the player with the most presence in a region when it is scored wins it: pieces, armies, influence. You do not need to destroy an opponent, just outnumber them at the right moment. It is the mechanic of modern conflict games, and it suits players who enjoy tension on the map, bluffing about intentions and alliances that last one turn.
Tables average 2 to 4 players, sessions around an hour and a half, recommended age 11 and up. Inis is Celtic area control with drafted cards for 2 to 4 in 90 minutes; Root: La Compagnia del Fiume adds asymmetric factions to a contested woodland for 1 to 6. Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy (EDIZIONE INGLESE) takes it to galactic scale over three hours; Conquest of Speros packs it into half an hour for 2 to 4.
