In area movement the map is split into irregular regions, provinces, rooms, islands, and pieces move from one area to an adjacent one. No hexes, no squares: what matters is who is where and which borders they hold. It is the structure under a great many conflict and adventure games, and it suits players who want a readable map and clear positioning decisions.
Average playing time is just over two hours, with a wide spread; tables of 2 to 4, recommended age 12 and up. Risiko! is still the template, 2 to 6 players and continents to hold. Inis uses the same kind of regions for Celtic area control in 90 minutes; Root: La Compagnia del Fiume moves asymmetric factions through a woodland for 1 to 6. Unmatched: Cobble & Fog (Edizione Inglese) is a 40-minute tactical duel across the zones of a Victorian city.
