In racing board games the first one over the line wins: cars, horses, canoes, explorers or spaceships fight for a finish, and every turn is a choice between pushing your luck and holding pace. Everyone grasps it at once, even people who never play, but underneath there can be hand management, dice or serious planning. On average these games seat 2-7, run under an hour and suit ages 10 and up.
Player count and depth decide. Heat: Pedal to the Metal is the motor race for 1-6 in an hour; Magico Atleta and Whakaari (EDIZIONE ITALIANA) are family races from age 6, the second for up to 8 people; River Rivals is a half-hour duel; The Witcher - Il Vecchio Mondo and Captains Log Kickstarter Edition are the heavy exceptions at two and a half and four hours, for anyone who wants a race inside an adventure.
