This game surprised me. I didn't expect it to be so fun and crunchy. Action selection row introduces a new action tile each round as well as being the round tracker. Sold Caverna The Cave Farmers to keep this version. Play time about 45 minutes, which is delightful. We find ourselves gravitating toward compact, inexpensive, crunchy games. You will think hard playing this game. If you like 2p only games this is really good. Make sure to buy the Big Box edition as it gives you the option of playing one or two eras. We usually play two eras when we get it out.

Caverna: Cave vs Cave – The Big Box is a strategic board game for 1-2 players. Players start with two dwarves and must expand their cave, build rooms, and gather resources over eight rounds. Each round offers new actions and building opportunities. An engaging experience in just 20 minutes.
The game game is in consignmentStock but only few copies are available
In more detail, each player starts the game with an individual player board that's covered with a random assortment of face-down building/room tiles and only one space. Some tiles are face up and available for purchase at the start of play. Four action tiles lie face up as well. At the start of each of the eight rounds, one new action tile is revealed, then players alternate taking actions, with the number of actions increasing from two up to four over the course of the game. As players excavate their mountainous player board, new building and room tiles are added to the pool; some rooms can be used immediately when acquired, whereas others require the use of an action tile.
After eight rounds, players tally their points for buildings constructed and gold collected to see who wins.
In Caverna: Cave vs Cave – Era II, players start exploring a side cave abundant in ore. Donkeys help you move the ore to the surface so that you can cast iron and forge weapons out of it — to protect your cave from anyone who wishes it harm, of course. In the meantime, your tribe has grown four primates capable of work. Keep on collecting grains, fibers, and building resources to increase your wealth. Shortly you will be engaging in agriculture...
Caverna: Cave vs Cave – The Big Box contains all of the material in the base game and first expansion in a single package.

Bought Dec 2023. I liked it more than Hil, but my brain is smaller than hers and was able to process it easier then Caverna.. Bought it with the idea of being able to play Caverna whenever with smaller set up, but turns out, that's not the case 12/18/23
After 4 Solo plays: 8.5 Fun, relatively light game that still has a worker placement feel. Can play it pretty quickly, especially if you stop after Era 1. However, I will almost always play Era 1 & 2 each time as just Era 1 feels a little too short.
Era I game feels too short. Era II definitely needed, so glad it is included. A lot of strategy and need to make each action meaningful.
Good game, but for me less excellent than the two player big box version of Agricola. Whereas the standard Agricola and Caverna are quite similar, these two lighter games are completely different. Most of time we only play the first part - the second part doesn't add really much, though the completed cave looks beautiful!
