Description
A game of world exploration and empire building. You represent a European empire colonizing the Mediterranean and shipping to all parts of the world to increase the empire's glory and status in Industry, Culture, Finance and Politics. When a region opens up (i.e. the shipping lanes are full) a player can colonize, attack or retrieve resources from that region. The game plays easily as each turn a player builds a building giving him a special action or increasing one of his main statistics, and gets a number of people with which to activate buildings for special actions (Ship, Occupy, Attack, Draw or Pay). Increased skill in Politics allow the player to hold cards that help increase his statistics and glory.

Here is a unique, highly interactive game with innovative mechanics. It is endowed with endless replayability and is thorougly entertaining every time I play it. A brilliant euro! The remake, with its massive map and components was a disappointment as it will hardly fit any but the largest of tables. The original will never leave my collection, however.
5/4/2016 Very abstract game with some set collection and area control. Low scoring, many options to feel competitive, and unique implementation of "slavery" where slave cards bring cheap, easy rewards but can be abolished which punishes everyone for investing into it. 5/29/2018 Bumping up from 8 to a 10. A decade later and this design still holds up. I adore this game and always want to play it, and I'm glad there's a Kickstarter bringing it back in print so everyone can play it.
Great game that attempts to mimic the early era of European colonization around the globe. Great limited "fighting" mechanism. Wonderful "slavery" mechanic. You may benefit but beware if you slave and the others abolish slavery. You will suffer. Always fun. Just so many darn small pieces to set up. Beward losing any of them. Has a cool 2-player variant with a Neutral Power, that plays different from the 3-5 player. Best with 4-5.
The ideal combination - simple mechanics, complex strategy. I like games with a well integrated theme but even though the theme is very thin here - there's enough theme to make the game not completely abstract. Really great game - easy to teach and to play. Plays surprisingly quickly for a game of this type.
CAUTION! Not suitable for children under 3 years of age. It contains small parts which could be swallowed or inhaled.
