I've owned all the gauge series and this was the best mix of pure math with the interaction of auctions.

Description
Irish Gauge — one of three titles in Winsome Games 2014 Essen Set — is played on a map of Ireland and is similar in style to many of the stock-based, cube-rail games released by Winsome Games since 2007.
On each player's turn, he can either place a share of one of five companies up for auction, build track (represented by cubes) in one of these five companies, upgrade a town to a city, or call for dividends. The dividends are paid out to shareholders of certain railroads based on how many cities/towns they connect to and how many shares of this company have been issued. The upgrade and dividend actions also affect game length and the likelihood of further dividends for each company. The game ends when a certain condition is met at the end of a player's turn, and the player with the highest sum of money and stock value at the end of this turn wins.

I feel this game is as refined as a swiss clockwork. The subtle changes made from the CE formula (fixed starting value for shares, less predictible dividends) make the game less calculatory while maintaining that very emergent gameplay which favor group thinking and daring plays. It's a fascinating experience to play that is quite accessible. Playing with poker ships definitively speeds up the game.

Amazing game very simple to teach but very complex in strategy. I feel like this game can be mean and cutthroat. I've played all three of Iron Rail series that have been released, and I think this one is the best. Ian O'Toole's art looks great but is so simplistic. This game is all about hoping you time things right as well a being lucky with your pulls on the cubes. I really can not say enough good things about this game.

(Capstone edition) It's gorgeous, though I play with poker chips. I think the operations of this game's companies are very simplistic (not hugely engaging), but building the shares portfolio through auctions I really enjoy a lot.

A beautiful step up from Ticket to Ride and an amazing introduction to the train games. It abstract the best elements from that series and packs them in a small box with amazing components and beautiful artwork by Ian O'Toole.
