Description Description

Kobayakawa is a game of bluffing and deduction, and the player that ends up with the highest numbered card wins the round. In this stylish new game from Jun Sasaki, components are kept at a minimum - there are only 15 cards and a handful of crest tokens.

Players each start with a random card in hand, and the rest is put in a pile at the center of the table with the first card flipped face up (this card is called the Kobayakawa).

The rules are simple: Each round, players take a turn and either discard their card face up in front of them and take a new one from the deck, or turn a card from the deck to replace the current Kobayakawa. After each player has taken a turn, they each decide if they want to compete for this round by putting a crest token on their card. Players that decided to compete then all reveal their card at once and compare their number.

The player with the highest number wins, but the player that has the smallest numbered card also adds the number of the current Kobayakawa on top of it.

Example:
Kobayakawa: 8
Player A: 9
Player B: Pass
Player C: 15
Player D: 12

Player C has the highest card value (15), but Player A is declared the winner as the results of the lowest card and the Kobayakawa is 17.

A surprisingly deep deduction and trick taking game for something so simple. Massively underrated here on BGG.

I love bluff games in general, but this amps up the difficulty by throwing in a "poker" element, as well. Basically a game of "high-card", but with some extra rules. Cool little game, easy to learn.

This was the first game from Oink Games that I bought. I don't know what it was about it, but something just sounded really fun, so I decided to give it a go. I'm so glad I did because it turned me on to a great game design company (I now own pretty much everything they've produced which is not out of print), and also set me off on a Japanese game collecting adventure! Kobayakawa itself is just a fantastic, easy to learn, quick to play card / betting game. It's like a super stripped down version of Poker or Blackjack...best hand wins, but with a twist! Pick it up!!

Initial 2 plays: Rated 9 I played this at the Tokyo Game Market on April 28th, 2013 at the Demo table and bought it straight away, as did all my friends who played it. Then when my other friends came, we went to the demo table again, and everyone also wanted to buy a copy. Such a great filler, easy to teach, creative, and such a simple game but who knew it would be so much fun!!! The art is awesome. I bought 3 copies. I can't stop thinking about this game :) After 5 plays: Still love this game. I can't stop betting all my money away. I'm liking this more and more as I play it.

I'm a sucker for microgames - always intrigued by what people can do with only a few resources. Interested to see how this plays. (Jan 2017) ---- I have the beautifully produced Oink version of the game and it's one of the highlights of my collection. An absolutely wonderful game to boot - as strong as Love Letter in a field where it's very difficult to create a substantial game. A wonderful filler that has opened many more game nights than my dreadful play-logging would suggest. One of only very few microgames that it would be easy to recommend to nearly anyone in the hobby.
