June 1945, World War II: the American armed forces attack Japan with incendiary bombs, reducing entire villages made of wooden houses to immense bonfires. Seita is still a child, and does not understand what is happening around him, and during the escape for survival with his little sister Setsuko, he loses sight of their mother. This is the dramatic epic of two children, forced to wander alone among the rubble of Kobe, a country reduced to ashes, and it is a denunciation of the horrors of any war, which as usual affects mainly the innocent.
