Liberation: D-day

On June 5, 1944, resistance fighters listening to radio broadcasts in France heard: “This is London. First, some personal messages: ‘You hurt my heart with a monotonous languor...’ Here it is, D-Day! In Limousin, the networks went into action: destruction of locomotives, railways, viaducts, attacks on command posts, destruction of telephone lines. ... On June 8, the supreme command of the occupation forces ordered the 2nd SS Das Reich Division to leave Montauban and move through Limousin to “break” the maquis, which were becoming alarmingly active. It must be ready to join the Normandy front on orders. By June 4, the Breton maquis had already begun to gather and carry out sabotage operations. On the night of June 5, 36 French SAS soldiers parachuted into Brittany. Their mission: organize the resistance, keep 85,000 Germans occupied in their garrisons, and isolate Brittany. No German troops must be allowed to reach the Normandy front.
