Criminally underrated hidden gem of a game that mixes theme with mechanics wonderfully. Need to play this more. Gets bonus points for being the only game I know of where cubes as a component are totally thematic.

Magnum Sal
Set in 14th century Poland, Magnum Sal immerses you in managing the Wieliczka salt mines. A strategy game where you'll administer resources and overcome logistical challenges for 2-4 players. With a 90-minute duration, it offers a balanced experience between strategic depth and accessibility for ages 10 and up.
Magnum Sal is a eurogame about exploration of a salt mine (second oldest still operating salt mine in the world). Each player takes the role of a foreman - the manager of a mining team. During the game, players will try to extract salt most efficiently from the mine, sell their "white gold" at the market, and above all complete the king's salt orders. The player who earns the most money from extracting salt receives the title of Royal Steward and wins the game.
(From the rulebook)
Magnum Sal is latin name that Wieliczka was noted in some documents for the first time - it means Great Salt. From this latin name, Wieliczka was formed - Magnum (Latin) -> Great (EN) -> Wielki (PL)
Quote from wikipedia (there is no source for this but it's probably the way that the name Wieliczka was formed):
Magnum Sal (latin) -> Wielka Sól -> Wielika Sól -> Wielicka -> Wieliczka

One of the most interesting and underrated economic games (judging from relatively low ranking here on BGG) in my collection. The designer successfully combines both a good economic model with elegant play mechanics that are very thematic. I especially like the rules of placing/moving miners (cannot break the 'chain' to the surface) and the competition for castle orders.
Played both three- and four-player games, seemed more balanced with three. Excellent game, involves several favv mechanisms and more fun when played a bit more ruthless.
Really enjoyed this, all the components just hang together nicely. It seems simple but there are "just enough" decisions. Because coins are your VPs you're always trading now for the future. One thing that would be nice (for increased longevity) were if there were more chambers for each level than the minimum just so you can never be sure what will show up.
A brilliant Polish answer to Agricola! Less complicated (no hundreds of annoying cards) and much better than simple economic games like Puerto Rico.
