Martian Chess is a 2-4 player game that uses Icehouse pieces, requiring one stash per player, and a chessboard. It was one of the games included in Icehouse: The Martian Chess Set and Pyramid Arcade. Much like its namesake, Martian Chess is a game of capturing pieces. Like Chess, Martian Chess is turn based, and played on a chessboard. In both games, players move and capture individual pieces, and each type of piece has distinct moving rules. However, Martian Chess differs from Chess in critical ways: Piece ownership is determined not by color but by location. Instead of capturing a specific piece, winning is determined by points, making it possible to force the end of the game and still win with no pieces left in that player's control. Lastly, Martian Chess easily supports 4 players as well as two, and can also be played with 3, 5 or 6 players if you use geomorphic chessboard sections; see this photo for an example.

Brilliant and exciting abstract game, one of the most elegant games in the Looney Labs collection. It's fast and quite simple, but the neutral pieces' mechanic is implemented really well. An excellent representative of modern abstract games.

Very neat Abstract Strategy game that bends the way you think about chess-like games (opposing sides, capturing pieces, etc). All pieces can potentially be controlled by either player, and captures could strengthen your opponent! Really neat!

I have six of the "Three player Martian Chess" segments printed out and laminated. When I get them out to play two or four player, people look at me very strangely.

As World War 5 does with Risk, Martian Chess keeps all the good parts of Chess, adds some pyramid flair, and condenses it into a fast playing time. Such clever mechanics. Nice strategic implications around a variety of factors, including how to control the first ranks on either side of the canal. Owned as part of Pyramid Arcade.

PPlayed 4x so far. It's still a delight. + 'area ownership' give the game a unique feel + simple-ish rules + cool components (in the new 2020 printing) + the '7 move' timer is a nice way to stop stalemates. - there should be some way to count to 7. (We used 7 beermats to keep track) Keen to explore more. Rating may change.
