Description
Medici: The Card Game is a new title by Reiner Knizia that captures the setting and spirit of the classic Medici, without the auction mechanism. In 15th century Florence, players seek to obtain the most valuable goods for trading ships by drawing 1 to 3 cards from a common deck each turn. After drawing, the active player must take the last drawn card and may choose one or both of the two previous cards, if available. They then load these goods cards onto their ship. Cards not taken remain available for subsequent players. When the ship is full (seven cards with two players, five cards with 3-6 players), the player is out of the round and scores for the day. Points are earned for the hold's value and for the number of goods of each type stored in the warehouse. The merchant with the highest earnings over three days wins. Some cards do not take up space on ships; others contribute to the hold's value but cannot be stored in the warehouse.

I've never played Medici but after buying and playing this game, I don't think I need to buy the original anymore.

8.0 - 2 plays, 5 players - Very impressed with this design. Veryuch still Medici without auctions, and works as well as Modern Art Card Game does. more new player friendly as well quick playing. Very heads up. Just the right amount of push your luck. 9.0 - 9 plays - Great at all player counts but esp great at 5. Game plays pretty quickly. The decisions can be really agonizing. Good for gamers or non-gamers.

Very easy to teach and a fun quick card game to play. Even when you're the only bidder, you're forced to consider the consequences of every card draw not only on your boat but on everyone elses.

Medici without the auctions sounds like it doesn't work, but it really does. Push your luck for gamers.
