Description
The role-playing game based on the comic is highly satisfying.
Built on a simplified version of the Burning Wheel engine, perhaps the leading indie system currently on the market (you roll a certain number of D6, with values of 4 or higher counting as success), the game keeps its basic promise – the ability to play as sword-wielding mice – and indeed offers a rather rich array of options.
A sort of brick measuring 20×20 centimeters (the same format as the comics), 320 richly illustrated pages, it is also a pleasing object to the senses.
A stroke of genius, the colorful dust jacket of the volume contains the map of the territory where the action takes place.
Simple, quick, very focused on themes and content – with very little risk of the story derailing – and clearly oriented, in tone and supporting materials, towards inexperienced players or even those having their first gaming experience, Mouse Guard RPG deserves what is for me a rather rare compliment – it is almost as good as the old red box of D&D.
It is a small, perfectly balanced game.
With a small and fairly uniform setting, characters quickly described by a few clear statistics and one of the best crutches for disoriented players in the world (you are a member of the Guard, you have a mission), Mouse Guard lends itself to the kind of play that seems to have been lost – on a small scale, with modest stakes, and ample opportunities for growth.
It is the ideal game to hand to kids who love fantasy (the age range indicated by the publisher is 10 years or older).
They are unlikely to be disappointed.
