Interesting game. I like how the action cards work and the player board building. Only played it 2-player and I get the feeling it's better with more.

Description
From Finnish designer Touko Tahkokallio comes Principato, a tactical game for 2-4 players. Powerful principalities are forming in Northern Italy. When is the best moment to expand? When will harvesting be profitable? How much force will be necessary to defend the city walls? Only the player who can correctly judge the timing of such decisions will be successful in the end. At the beginning of the game, each player receives a small, unprotected principality. Over three epochs the various principalities can be developed. A steady production of money and food is needed to expand the principality and to maintain an army of mercenaries. During the game there are several cultural and military valuations that give the players victory points. The unusual part of this game are the action cards, which are available to all players. From the changing pool of possible actions, players have to secure the most suitable cards and use them at the appropriate time – reaching for the new means while parting with the old. This simple mechanism turns Principato into a varied tactical game full of tough decisions.

Wonderful game... hidden gem! comes into its own played solo. Equally good with more players. A neat little puzzle!

A light economic game but with substantial depth and nice balances. The 2nd game from Touko that I like! I compare it to St Petersburg.

I was looking this one for my list, a friend took initiative and i had the chance to test it, is great Euro game but i feel that a player or maybe two could get really screwed because the card that goes out in the row. like the mechanic and remembers me a little of loyang with kingsburg.

The card play and swap mechanic is clever, the rules are simple, and the game is fun and plays quickly. However balance is achieved by greatly limiting the actions presented on the cards, limiting the scope of what can be done and sometimes making it seem as though the game is playing you. This game reminds me of The Speicherstadt (although the mechanics are not as unique), i.e. simplification achieved at the expense of variety and depth of cards. It's certainly worth a few more plays and Tahkokallio is a talented designer worth keeping an eye on.
