Hirelings are absolutely essential for a two player game of Root - I would literally strongly advise against playing it with two otherwise. With Hirelings, though, 2p Root is amazing! 10/10 expansion.

I love the quality of the meeples and how easy it is to implement each hireling. The replayability of this game is definitely helped by the higher amount of hirelings in the game.
