This is the exact expansion I wanted for terraforming mars. It doesn't change the game so much as slingshot you past the first 20-30 minutes of slower game play straight into the fun part. It shortens the playing time by 30 minutes in the best possible way.

The Colonies add more to do and makes the game longer as you can build up a little more

We always play with colonies now. Some of the floater cards seem not as good though especially when we decided to pass on Venus Next.
