I generally am of the opinion that "less is more" when it comes to games, and prefer to play with fewer expansions than more. Prelude is the exception to this: more games need expansions like prelude. It adds some extra decision-making up-front, but in exchange it allows players to hit the ground running with some infrastructure for the engine ready to go.
Speeds the game up a bit and increases the fun of planning on turn one. Not necessary but will never play without it now.
Practically required. This is the only expansion to any game I own and it is worth it if you like the base game
No more plays of Terraforming Mars without this expansion! Makes it so much better.
