The Charge: The Light Brigade at Balaclava is a solo game inspired by the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava on October 25, 1854, during the Crimean War. A massive force of Russian cavalry attempted to attack the British base at Balaclava: the incursion was repelled, but an order from British commander Lord Raglan to retake some captured redoubts was disastrously interpreted, and the Light Brigade was launched into a desperate charge into a valley surrounded by Russian cannons and infantry. The episode inspired Tennyson's famous poem and tarnished Raglan's reputation.
The product includes two connected games, which can also be played separately, plus a historical variant. In the first, The Battle, the player is Lord Raglan and must manage the battle: repel the incursion of the Russian cavalry (with the help of the Heavy Brigade and the Thin Red Line) and prepare the conditions for the charge. Aides-de-Camp, represented by cards, are assigned to move the forces; one can attempt to gain French assistance and counter journalist Russell, always against the clock.
