Description
The Mountain Witch is a standalone tabletop RPG in which players portray ronin in mythical feudal Japan. Outlaws without masters, these samurai accept a task no one else would dare: to assault and kill the dreaded O-Yanma, the Witch of Mount Fuji. Marked by the past and shrouded in dark fate, the characters soon find themselves in dire circumstances.
Born from the April 2004 Game Chef RPG competition on The Forge, The Mountain Witch is a landmark independent RPG. This revised edition offers streamlined gameplay advice and simplified explanations for a smoother experience.
The game follows a "play to discover your character" approach, with your character emerging during play. Each ronin has a secret Dark Fate introducing a hidden motive, along with a zodiac sign as inspiration. Trust points are spent to aid or betray others in future conflicts. Guided by a Game Master, players traverse the foothills and paths of Mount Fuji, face the Witch's servants, and guard their own secrets. The true drama is not the confrontation with the Witch herself, but the mounting tension between characters throughout the journey.
