J.R.R.Tolkien was a man of many talents: expert linguist, philologist, scholar of literature and folklore, of course a great writer and creator of worlds. But he was also a very skilled painter and illustrator. This is evidenced by the rich materials, largely unpublished, collected in this volume: letters, notes, but above all illustrations, maps, sketches of places and characters, showing how the Middle-earth that has fascinated and continues to fascinate an increasingly large number of fantasy enthusiasts took shape in the writer's imagination.
