A hex grid is a map of hexagons: every space touches six others, distances are equal in every direction and there are none of the awkward diagonals of a square board. It is the standard for wargames and tactical miniature games, but it also turns up in abstracts and tile-laying games. Average playing time here is above 170 minutes precisely because the section holds so many military simulations.
The gap between titles is huge, so check length first. Hive Pocket Ultimate and Hive Ultimate are the 20-minute two-player abstract, age 9 and up, with no board because the hexagons are the pieces themselves. HARMONIES PULSE is a 45-minute tile-laying game for up to 4. Theocratia (EDIZIONE ITALIANA) sits around 80 minutes. Dragon Eclipse – Edizione Italiana uses the grid for two-hour tactical fights for 1 or 2 players, in Italian.
