Description Description
Bios:Origins is the 3rd part of the Bios Trilogy. The action starts much earlier than most Civilization games: 200,000 years ago or even earlier. One to four players represent the human subspecies extant at that time: Sapiens, Neanderthal, Denisovans, & Hobbits. Take them on an adventure to enlarge your brain, acquire language, discover new worlds, domesticate strange beasts (such as riding war kangaroos or mammoths), discover the wonders and terrors of religion, dive for pearls, challenge the gods, enslave rival hominins, and perhaps enter the Enlightenment. Although wars of conquest and religion are possible, most of the fighting will be internal. You have only limited control of over your ruling class, and if your priests are in control and do a poor job, they will get killed and usurped by merchants or warlords.

Win by specializing as cultural, political, or industrial civilization. This means, unlike most civilization games, that a cult figure on a mountaintop in New Zealand can win over an Emperor that has swept the globe with his armies.

The game integrates with Bios:Genesis and Bios:Megafauna, so that you can start as a variety of intelligent but not-quite lingual marine or terrestrial creatures. Two maps and 26 hex chits are included, to accommodate variable landforms and cratons on habitable Earth, Mars, or Venus. Solitaire and cooperative variants are included.

Love how the theme create a really interesting narrative, this game is not something that you can abstracted like referring to city as cube, or moving pawn as just moving it. You have to invest and digest the theme, therefore everything are much-much simpler than it seems. Played several times solo, 2p and 3p, all is great experience, more are better though. Epic civ building, with amazing mechanic tied to theme itself.

After my first first play a gave it a questionable 8-9. Now after 5 plays i have gone through understanding the full depth it hides, and the excellent way resources and climate chits are distributed and weighted. Bravo to the designers, this is a masterpiece! And moreover, it is the first time that i didn't need a heavy cardboard video to understand the gameplay. The rulebook is surprisingly very good for a sierra-mandre games rulebook :-).

Rulebook: good thing someone else taught it because I couldn’t figure it out. Standard Phil verbose. Want to explore it more, but wish there was a variety of scoring epochs to make each game different. Every first round will score mysticism. Feels like you’re building a civ as compared to bare bones Tapestry. Mechanically, the actions seem simple, the decisions tough, just wish the rulebook was written better which can be said for every Eklund game. Edit: Several plays now. Epic tableau civilization game.

My first impression solo standard game get 10 Stars. Iam looking forward for an multi-player game and will re-rate maybe then. It looks like more complicated as it is. Yes, there are a lot of symbols, but when you can distinguish between actions, events and map-related stuff, it will be more clear. Don`t get be deterred by this. The mechanic of the game is simple as any other worker placement game. The complicated aspekt is the varity of combinations and parameters to consider when placing. If you comfortable with Eklunds Games, you will find similarities to other games, Neanderthal for example.
