My favorite game from the old days. Bidding, a little area control, and various paths to victory to make the most of the bids you win. I really want the new kickstarter remake with all the bells and whistles.

In Cyclades, each player controls a city-state of ancient Greece, aiming to dominate the Cyclades archipelago through military and commercial control. Use troops, fleets, and the help of mythical creatures, gaining the favor of protective deities with gold offerings. A strategic game for 2-5 players, with games lasting about 60 minutes, suitable for ages 14 and up.

Description
In this latest collaboration between Bruno Cathala and Ludovic Maublanc, players must buy the favor of the gods in their race to be the first player to build two cities in the Ancient Greek island group known as the Cyclades. Victory requires respect for all the gods - players cannot afford to sacrifice to only one god, but must pay homage to each of five gods in turn. Each turn, the players bid for the favors of the gods, as only one player can have the favor of each god per turn - and each player is also limited to the favor of a single god per turn. Ares allows the movement of player armies and the building of Fortresses. Poseidon allows players to move their navies and build Ports. Zeus allows his followers to hire priests and build temples. Athena provides her worshipers with philosophers and universities. Apollo increases the income of his worshipers.

Classique nostalgique. Une production et un thème incroyables, une mécanique d'actions par enchères très intéressante, des parties toujours tendues. L'extension Hadès permet de régler certains problèmes mais rend le jeu plus aléatoire, est utile pour rendre les parties avec des joueurs moins experts plus palpitantes. Se joue comme un euro avec des prises de décisions plusieurs tours en avance, mais une tension et des rebondissements toujours présents.

This game is definitely a 10, pretty close to gaming perfection in my view. Every game played so far has been an absolute nail-biter. Primarily a wargame but there are several alternative paths to victory (or disgrace). Players compete on so many levels thanks to a powerful auction mechanic that constantly forces them to devise work-arounds. You depend on the gods (whom you must bribe) to do anything and you always must be prepared to go with a plan B (or even C or D) if you get outbid for their favour. It is also a resource management game and resources are generally extremely tight. Great fun and a lot of player interaction, but be careful what you wish for!
