Extremely variable difficulty spikes which practical means that one may experience the hardest and the easiest game all in the same evening. Of course this is because the possibilities are endless; This is a game of luck, luck mitigation, planning, push your luck with some very serious tactical decisions. It leaves a lor of room for custom rules, variants and everything can be tweaked to increase/decrease difficulty and duration. Elder sign manages to combine all the above along with the mythos elements and provide a solid fun experience which leaves the desire for more and rarely gets old. Quickly became on my favorites.

Elder Sign is a fast-paced, cooperative dice game of supernatural intrigue for one to eight players by Richard Launius and Kevin Wilson, the designers of Arkham Horror. Players take the roles of investigators racing against time to stave off the imminent return of the Ancient One. Armed with tools, allies, and occult knowledge, investigators must put their sanity and stamina to the test as they adventure to locate Elder Signs, the eldritch symbols used to seal away the Ancient Ones and win the game.
To locate Elder Signs, investigators must successfully endure Adventures within the museum and its environs. A countdown mechanism makes an Ancient One appear if the investigators are not quick enough. The investigators must then battle the Ancient One. A clever and thematic dice mechanism pits their exploration against monsters and the sheer difficulty of staying sane and healthy, all within the standard game duration of one to two hours.

Pure dice-chucking fun with an appropriately tense theme, greatly improved when using the expansions. Reception is somewhat polarized, and I think unduly harsh overall. Though I do understand the complaints around swingy-ness, and length of play. Nonetheless, I really enjoy it for what it is both coop and solo (multihanded).
One of my all time favorite games. You can enjoy playing even in single mode. The complexity is bit high. The rules are fine while there too many things to consider and you'll get used to them in time.
Elder Sign was and always will remain one of my first serious tabletop games, a serious deviation from the classic Monopolies and its myriad of clones and stupid A-to-B adventures, where mostly the luck of the draw determines your success, Elder Sign being a great exception. The depth, the macabre storytelling, as well as great many Expansions and addons that make the game so much better (and, perhaps, most importantly - different) are just too good to pass by. Yes, the game is more luck than strategy, but it honestly doesn't hurt its appeal to me.
Solo mode review: Utterly replayable and no special rules or mechanics for solo play - just the regular rules. With the various of characters, adventure and other world cards to defeat, random monster generation, and clock mechanic I just can't see this getting repetitive or easy. Even if you know some tricks of strategy, you can't predict if your ancient one might attack early or if you didn't quite keep the right items for the end battle. A good solid 1-2 hour game even in solo mode.
