Description
In Hostage Negotiator, you play the part of a law enforcement agent responsible for negotiating the release of hostages taken by an unscrupulous figure hell-bent on having his or her demands met.
Each turn in the game represents a conversation between you and the hostage taker. You'll play cards and roll dice to increase conversation points, decrease the threat level, and release hostages. Hostage Negotiator uses a unique "hand-building" mechanism that puts cards you purchase directly in your hand for next turn rather than leaving you wondering when the cards will show up like in deck-building games.
In Hostage Negotiator there are multiple paths to victory, but the hostage taker has other plans. Will you try to calm him and get him to surrender? Will you stall and bide your time before sending in the team for a major extraction? How many hostages will you save? These are many of the exciting decisions you will make in a game of Hostage Negotiator!

Amazing game, that's made even better by the career mode. I love the decisions and the story. The most evil dice of any game ever - and they add such delicious tension. It only ever feels bad when you've spent many turns setting up a plan and it fails spectacularly with one bad roll. Ya just gotta go with the flow and keep trying to save just one more hostage.
Rated 8 after 2 plays. I don't get a lot of time for solitaire gaming, so a game that plays as quickly as this one is a plus. Excellent components, interesting, puzzly gameplay with perhaps just a smidgin too much randomness. Edit: 9/9/2016. Four more plays, four more losses, increased the rating to 10. Brilliant game.
Love the theme and the feel of it. Dice can ruin a well thought out plan, so to like, you must tolerate that. The theme comes strongly, and there are a lot of strategic decisions to make (taking into account the dice comment above). Lots of "risk management" and tense moments.
If you define this game by the dice play you are playing it wrong. This is a card management game with dice. Forget the puzzle or strategy and lose yourself in the theme. That makes the puzzle/strategy make more sense. It's not supposed to be predictable. Abductors are not stable. Fast and fun makes for a keeper.
Easy to setup. Rulebook instructions are clear and concise. The game is very thematic. Gameplay is deep enough for me. Dice roll results force you to change your strategy every now and then. The game does not have a large footprint especially if you follow ricky royal's style of just sorting the available cards in 1 pile.
