Pax Renaissance 2nd Edition is a game for 1 to 4 players where you play as a banker in Europe at the height of the Renaissance during the late 15th and early 16th-century. A time when European nobility and warlords declined and the arts and technology advanced in the wake of a new economic force: merchants and bankers. These bankers became the wealthiest private individuals ever as they guided Europe into the modern age. As a Renaissance banker, you will finance kings or republics, sponsor voyages of discovery, join secret cabals, or unleash jihads and inquisitions. Your choices determine if Europe is elevated into the bright modern era or remains festering in dark feudalism. Four victories determine the future course of Western Society: will it be towards imperialism, trade globalization, religious totalitarianism, or enlightened art and science? New components include punchouts for pirate ships, pawns for concessions and serfs, placards for player boards, and empire squares allowing storage of repressed tokens and queens even if the King is not in a player Tableau. Extra game Map Cards are included, allowing the mounted gameboard to be left behind for small game portability. Useful if you have limited space in your game bag. Expanded rules include Dalmatians, Cryptography, Condottiere, apostasy, and the solitaire game. Strategy and Frequently-Asked Questions are included.

I see the game as a more tactical game than a strategic one. Sure, there are strategies but they can be short-lived due to the ever-changing state of the game. And the rules are not really that complex but the difficulty comes with memorizing what each action does. Thankfully the player aids are great and tell you what to do for each action. Lovely game and very different from everything else out there. Plus you get to learn a lot about universal history.

I would give this 9 because the biased footnotes are a little irritating, but there's so much breadth & replayability... and you can see the other, opposing side of Phil's interpretation play out in the game anyway.

If there was one game I'd bring in the apocalypse it would be this one. Always endless options and counter-plays, game to game map state can be wildly different. Will jihad sweep through europe or will protestants finally get their reformation? This game tells a great story every time.

Excellent tactical game, genius design. Love the theme, each game tells a different story and can be incredibly tense. Steep learning curve but once it clicks you're gonna love it!
