Description Description
It's a cooperative team survival game. Players become crew members of a small spaceship scanning dangerous sectors of galaxy. The missions last just 10 real-time minutes (hyperspace jump, sector scan, hyperspace jump back) and the only task the players have is to protect their ship.

On 2 CDs (or Scenario cards if you don't have a CD player available) are ten minute long soundtracks that represent central computer announcements about the presence of various threats. These vary from space battleships and interceptors to different interstellar monsters and abominations, asteroids or even intruders and malfunctions on the spaceship. Players have to agree who will take care of which task and coordinate their actions (moving around the ship, firing weapons, distributing energy, using battlebots to deal with intruders, launching guided missiles, etc.) in real time to defend the ship. Only a well-working team can survive 10 minutes and make the jump back to safety.

The game offers several difficulty levels, huge variability and a unique experience for one to five player teams. One mission lasts only about 30 minutes, including setup and evaluation.

Unique gaming experience. It's a cooperative game, but different from every other coop I've played. The soundtrack imposes a time limit and creates a certain amount of chaos, which prevents analysis paralysis (where players try to analyse every possible move in detail) and reduces quarterbacking (where the most experienced player simply tells everybody else what to do). Coop games typically alos have to be very difficult (i.e. players lose most of the time) or they quickly become dull - but this game creates so much stress in the first half that it's an exciting experience also when the players win.

Real-time co-op chaos managing a ship under constant threat. The soundtrack drives frantic planning and execution. Demanding coordination, tense and unique—brilliant but stressful.

Not for the faint of heart. No long discussions and excruciating downtime while waiting for other players to make up their minds. Just solving the problems the game throws at you. Even better with the expansion.

Space Alert is a 10 out of 10 for me. As someone who also loves RoboRally, this game takes that kind of chaos and tension to another level. The time pressure, the constant communication, and the coordination under stress create an experience that feels intense and hilarious at the same time. The best moment is always at the end, when you finally see what is left of your supposedly perfect plan. What felt flawless in the moment often turns into complete disaster, and that is exactly what makes it so good. This game never gets boring, not even with the same group. A true classic that I will always enjoy bringing to the table.

The best real time game I've played (when paired with the expansion). Presents challenging problems to be solved quickly, which are still interesting even after a hundred plays. The resolution part at the end can feel a little slow though.
