Not as unbalanced as I was expecting. Interesting/fun change up to the early game. I don't think it improves or detracts from the game. Ideally it is played with people who have already played the game a couple of times. Choosing a strong starting position but with a late turn order still runs the very real risk that an earlier player will put down a house where you want to before your first turn (e.g., by spending 6 food and a crest, or just using a strong merchant/joker action).
